A new alliance for frontier technology
On February 28, Fudan University hosted the 2026 Terahertz Summit Forum and the Inauguration Ceremony of the Terahertz Innovation Alliance at Guanghua Tower, bringing together leading academics, researchers, and industry representatives from across China.

The establishment of the Alliance marks a new collaborative mechanism uniting universities, research institutes, and technology enterprises to advance China’s terahertz sector — bridging fundamental research, technology development, and industrial application.

15 founding members, 66 council institutions
Under the guidance of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, the Alliance was co-founded by 15 leading institutions including Fudan University, Tsinghua University, Peking University, Sun Yat-sen University, Beijing Institute of Technology, University of Electronic Science and Technology of China, the Chinese Academy of Sciences, ZTE Corporation, and Huawei Technologies, with 66 organisations serving as inaugural council members.
Fudan University was elected as Chair Unit and Secretary-General Unit of the Alliance.

Terahertz development requires collective wisdom and concerted effort. We must build a collaborative innovation community, said Mao Junfeng, Deputy Director General of the MIIT’s High-Tech Department.

Fudan University President Jin Li noted that the Alliance plays an important role in overcoming key technological bottlenecks and accelerating the transition from laboratory research to industrial application, while strengthening China’s independent terahertz technology capabilities.

Pan Yan, Deputy Director General of the Shanghai Municipal Commission of Economy and Informatizationstated:Shanghai must embrace its mission and accelerate on this new track. The Alliance marks a shift from individual efforts to collective strength.
The Alliance will focus on tracking global trends, organising collaborative research, strengthening self-reliant technological infrastructure, and fostering talent. It aims to accelerate breakthroughs in core components, chips, and scientific instruments while advancing technical standards and supporting industrial ecosystems.
The summit also featured keynote reports from leading academicians including Xu Ningsheng, Sun Shengli, Shi Shengcai, and Hong Wei, who shared insights on terahertz applications in communications, astronomy, and advanced sensing. Experts from 12 member organisations presented research on terahertz communications, imaging, and security screening, demonstrating the technical depth and industrial potential of the Alliance.

The Terahertz Innovation Alliance will serve as a strategic platform to enhance China’s global competitiveness in this frontier field, driving innovation from fundamental science to real-world impact.
